.history.

House Lantfore has, for as long as anyone can remember, always been held in the highest esteem in Fairn. Members have held the highest offices in the land, married princesses, been in line to succession to the throne. And for as long as anyone can remember, the head of the House had always, always been male.

So while Lord Ennis Lantfore, a proud and stubborn man of great political nous, seemed quite delighted at the birth of Anabeth, his first child and a daughter, it was no secret among members of the household what gender he truly hoped the child would be. Anabeth grew up to be a sweet girl, adored by the household and her peers. There was no noble daughter who did not want to be her friend, there was no noble son who did not find her attractive. It was this sort of role that Ennis had planned for his daughter, for he was of the popular opinion that women were meant to be admired for their beauty and graces, to make the little social connections that would stand the House in good stead, to forge alliances through marriage. On the other hand, to Ennis, women were soft, emotional, weak, they had none of the steel needed to further the House's name, none of the guile to navigate Fairn's political landscape, none of the hunger for glory. House Lantfore could not possibly be headed by a woman. The head of House Lantfore needed backbone. And so, every time it was announced that Lantfore was expecting another child, Ennis would pray that this time, it would be a son.

As the years passed, House Lantfore experienced miscarriages, stillbirths, children, and Ennis did not get his wish.

By the time Anabeth blossomed into a woman grown, her father had yet to truly acknowledge that she would most likely succeed him. Her mother and her tutors, however, were not quite so stubborn. When Ennis was away in Reyse, Anabeth was taught governance, law, politics, battle strategy, everything her father had been taught himself in years past, steel, guile, backbone. When Ennis arrived home, Anabeth embroidered, played the piano, chatted with other noble girls about the weather, gossip from the court, the latest in Fairn fashion, and most of all, pretended that she was her lord father's sweet darling daughter who knew nothing about how the country was run. Her tutors assured Anabeth that she would not have to pretend for long. Age will beat Lord Ennis' desire for a son, and then he will have to accept Anabeth as his heir. Only then would her intelligence come to him as a pleasant surprise and reassurance.

Two events soon derailed this plan. The most recent event came when the testers arrived at the Lantfore estate when Anabeth turned nineteen. Her father was pleased when he was told she passed; with her pedigree, he thought, it was a near certainty she would succeed at the academy and yet another member of House Lantfore will be in service to the King. But in case she did fail, well, she was a woman after all, and she could still marry a powerful lord. It was very well for Ennis that Anabeth was to attend Everthorne, in any case, for eight months ago, the Lord and Lady Lantfore announced that they were expecting another child.

And so, Anabeth arrives at Everthorne Academy with Ennis having made it known that her right to succeed him as the next head of the family, a position she had taken years to prepare for, is only temporary, since the true heir to House Lantfore will arrive in a month, and hoping that her father's wish remains ungranted, as there is nothing she should love more than the chance to prove her father wrong in thinking her an unsuitable heir.

.personality.

Anabeth the sweet child has grown, from an outsider's point of view, into an equally sweet and very lovely woman. Her demeanour is always pleasant, open and welcoming, though she keeps everyone at a polite distance. She enjoys socialising and conversation. She knows when to speak, when to laugh, when to press a topic further and when to let go. Everything she says is in complete sincerity and she seems to be incapable of having a nasty or catty thought.

Her generally innocent air belies her natural intelligence. Her father's chauvinistic opinion of women and her tutors' rigorous lessons in history, governance, politics, things a heir, a man should know have left Anabeth completely bored by female company and what she sees as their emptyheaded conversation. She hopes that she will find Everthorne somewhat stimulating, as she had never known one of her female peers to demonstrate some sort of intellect, while she has been taught that men feel threatened by women who do not parrot back at them, but having to play the first daughter and heir (presumptive, says her father) of the great House Lantfore may curb that enjoyment. She sees Everthorne as an opportunity to prove her credentials to her father, in case her newest sibling turns out to be a girl or dies, both of which are equally likely in Anabeth's mind. Anabeth is tired of playing an innocent, empty woman, but persists because she knows that there is no figure, no archetype that is more underestimated, and people underestimating her - her father most of all - may sometime in the future, be her greatest asset.

.appearance.

Anabeth is a diminutive, slender woman, with long lilac hair and blue eyes. She always has a polite, sometimes kind, smile, and the sort of delicate beauty and air that in her opinion, implies that she is a little airheaded.

.miscalleneous.
